How police officer who used to trail Dr Besigye mysteriously died inside his bedroom


KAMPALA . The Police in Kampala Metropolitan are investigating circumstances under which its senior officer Superintendent of Police (SP) Musa Walugembe died inside his bedroom .


Walugembe ,45 ,a well-trained detective who made a name in trailing veteran politician Dr Kizza Besigye around 2011 and 2016 ,the time the latter was at the peak of Uganda’s politics , was found dead in his residence in Najjanankumbi, a Kampala suburb , in the early hours of Tuesday.


According to police, officers received information about Walugembe’s death at around 12:09 a.m. and immediately rushed to the scene.


The deceased was reportedly living alone in the house and had locked himself from inside Police had to break the door shutter to gain access.
The body was later conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary for autopsy examination to establish the actual cause of his death .


Police preliminary investigations reveal that there were no visible injuries or abrasions. Walugembe’s neighbours told detectives that the deceased had recently complained of chest pain. He was last seen alive on Saturday, August 30, 2025.


In an official statement on Wednesday , the Uganda Police Force extended its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late officer.


“The Uganda Police Force extends its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late SP Musa Walugembe. May they find strength and peace during this difficult time,” Mr Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, said
Walugembe thrusted to the limelight during the 2011 General Elections ,although he initially joined the Police as a special police constable .

He worked with violent crime crack units , eventually integrating into the formal police structure and receiving several promotions .

He was a key pillar in gathering intelligence information for police from the infamous Walk-to Walk protests of April 2011 ,which were organized by Dr Besigye and Nyendo Mukungwe legislator Mathias Mpuuga under the Action for Change (A4C) pressure group .Walugembe and his fellow detective Albert Muhumuza were assigned to monitor key organisers of the protests using motorcycles .

In recognition of his work , Walugembe was promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector of Police and later put in charge of the team responsible for monitoring Dr Besigye .He frequently appeared during arrests ,arriving in a police van to transport the then Opposition leader .

On January 24,2022 , during a police operation against Dr Besigye’s supporters , Walugembe was accused of ordering his subordinates to shoot at Daily Monitor journalist Isaac Kasamani who was covering the confrontation at Kalerwe Roundabout in Kampala .

Following the end of the Walk-to-Walk protests, Walugembe was prompted to Assistant Superintendent of Police .He continued working in violent crime crack units and ,by 2020 was the officer -in- charge of the Special Investigations Unit in Kireka ,Wakiso District .

In August 2023, Walugembe was again prompted to the rank of Superintendent of Police .At the time of his death ,he was serving at the Directorate of Crime Intelligence .By press time , a postmortem report had not been released to establish what exactly killed Walugembe .
