2026 polls: DP’s Mbidde confirms plans to contest in Buwekulu South Constituency seat


KAMPALA.It is now official ! outspoken Democratic Party vice President Fred Mukasa Mbidde, has confirmed that he is going to contest for member of parliament in Buwekula County Constituency, Mubende District .


Mbidde 50, has in the past 15 years struggled to enter parliamentary but all his efforts have failed . He tried in Makindye West ,Kalungu East and Nyendo –Mukungwe constituencies and did not succeed .


Unveiling his newly constructed house in the constituency on Saturday , Mbidde said Butoloogo ,Buwekula Constituency is no his new home despite hailing from Kalungu in Greater Masaka .


“ It is true but I was born in Masaka ,but I can assure you that Butoloogo is now my home together with my family ,” he said
He said he decided to contest in the constituency after numerous requests from elders in the area .


“I had decided not to participate in elective politics again ,but since I have been requested by people I trust who are ready to support me , I have offered myself to represent them in Parliament ,but I will stand on the DP ticket ,” he said


After failing to enter Ugandan Parliament ,Mbidde in 2012 lobbied the NRM which has numerical strengthen to support his candidature to join the East African Legislative Assembly where he served for two consecutive terms .


Mbidde’s public announcement confirms a story this website published over a week ago .
Interestingly, majority of the voters in Buwekula who are backing Mbidde’s bid to stand for MP are ruling NRM supporters . One of them, Samuel Sentamu, said: ” We[in NRM] are in a political marriage with DP and it is not a crime to support our own , ”


The Saturday function was attended by many residents and Mubende Municipality MP Bashir Lubega Ssempa also graced it .


Mbidde’s entry in the race comes after the incumbent Buwekula County MP William Ndori Museveni declared that he will not seek re-election after serving for only one term .

Six contenders including one from ruling National Resistance Movement and two from National Unity Platform (NUP) are eying the same seat .
