Kampala, Uganda — SMS Construction Uganda Limited has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting cancer treatment and palliative care in Uganda during the 5th Regional Conference on Cancer and Palliative Care, held last friday at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala.
Delivering remarks on behalf of CEO Mr. Sadat Muhinda, SMS Construction’s Project Manager Martha Namuwaya highlighted the company’s ongoing partnership with the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), describing it as a collaboration rooted in building not just infrastructure, but a foundation of hope, healing, and equity for all Ugandans.
“It is a profound honor to contribute to this noble cause. Our work goes beyond construction; it’s about ensuring access to equitable, quality healthcare for all,” said Namuwaya, reading Muhinda’s speech.
She emphasized the company’s role in building state-of-the-art cancer treatment centers, integrating affordable palliative care units, and supporting community outreach programs like the annual Cancer Run and the UCI Children’s Hostel.

The event brought together medical experts, government officials, and development partners to advance action on cancer care and policy implementation in Uganda. Mr. Muhinda’s remarks also praised the government’s development agenda under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and acknowledged the leadership of President Yoweri Museveni and the Ministry of Health in prioritizing cancer as a national health priority.
A heartfelt appreciation was extended to Dr. Jackson Orem, Executive Director of UCI, and his team for their relentless efforts in leading the cancer response in Uganda.
“Dr. Orem’s leadership is a beacon in the fight against cancer. We are proud to walk this journey with him,” said Namuwaya.
In his own address, Dr. Orem commended SMS Construction not only for sponsoring the conference but also for their hands-on role in building a multipurpose facility for the Cancer Treatment and Research Institute.
“They are not only funders of this conference, but they are also our trusted partners in infrastructure development. Their work speaks for itself in terms of quality,” Dr. Orem noted.
Further adding to the momentous occasion, SMS Construction was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation for its commitment to delivering quality works in Uganda’s construction industry and continued support of the health sector. The recognition was officially presented during the conference at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

Hon. Anifa Kawooya Bangirana, Minister of State for Health (General Duties), representing Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, applauded SMS Construction directors Mr. Ainea Ashaba and Mr. Sadat Muhinda for their sustained contributions to Uganda’s health infrastructure.
She also encouraged the public to prioritize their health through regular medical check-ups:
“We all need to take charge of our health. At least two body check-ups a year can save lives and prevent sudden deaths,” she advised.
The conference underscored the essential role of public-private partnerships in Uganda’s cancer care strategy. As SMS Construction continues to collaborate with UCI and other key stakeholders, the message remains clear: cancer is a national challenge that demands unity, innovation, and lasting commitment to ensure accessible healthcare for every Ugandan.
