One’s of Uganda’s finest entrepreneur Dr Kyabaggu dies at 80


KAMPALA. The business fraternity in Kampala and Uganda at large is mourning the death of Dr. Paul Kyabaggu Mawanda, the founder and proprietor of Bukoola Chemical Industries, a leading agricultural inputs company in the country .


Prince Dr. Paul Mawanda Kyabaggu,80 ,who was also chairperson Ugandan conglomerate BCIL Group passed away on Saturday in India.
An accomplished industrialist Kyabaggu , has led the group through decades of expansion. Unlike many moneyed Ugandans who want to be in public marketing themselves, Kyabaggu kept a low profile and indeed his businesses were more popular than the owner himself.


Currently, BCIL owns businesses including Bukoola Chemical Industries, BCI Pharmaceuticals, Royale Property Consultants, MPK Ranchers and Crete Block.
“His vision shaped our present and will continue to guide our future,” the company said in a statement, adding that memorial details would be communicated later.


Mass will be held every evening at his home in Lubowa as the family and colleagues await the arrival of his body.
Business leaders praised Kyabaggu’s contribution to Uganda’s agribusiness and manufacturing sectors.
“His selfless dedication to purpose, his compassionate heart, and his unwavering spirit will be profoundly missed,” said the company.


Kyabaggu’s death comes as BCIL marks its 50th anniversary, a milestone he presided over earlier this year.
Kyabaggu founded Bukoola Chemical Industries in 1973 as a family business selling general merchandise. The company later evolved into a major player in the country’s agrochemical sector, rebranding as The Associated Chemical Industries Limited in 1980 before changing back to its current name.


In 1996, the company expanded its operations to include the importation and distribution of crop protection products. Today, Bukoola is recognized as a key provider of insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers and other solutions for farmers.


At the company’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2022, Kyabaggu reflected on his mission to “advance the science of crop protection by providing top-quality, solution-based products.”


Beyond his work in agriculture, Kyabaggu was also a notable figure in education, having founded St. Joseph of Nazareth Secondary School and St. Simon Nazareth Primary School.


The family days it will release funeral arrangements when the body arrives in the country any time later this week .
