KIBULI .New details have emerged about the tragic death of veteran Afrigo Band icon Moses Matovu, following a suspect love-triangle confrontation outside a residence in Kibuli, Kampala, early Thursday morning.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police have officially launched a murder investigation and launched a manhunt for a male suspect, believed to be a private security guard, who fled the scene after the fatal early morning altercation.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, the incident occurred at approximately 5:30am on September 24, 2026, in Makindye Division.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that at about 5:30am, the deceased allegedly went to the residence of one Rose. It’s alleged that as he and the lady were leaving the residence, they were confronted by a male suspect who is believed to have been formerly in a relationship with the same lady,” Ms Kawala stated.
Police revealed that a physical altercation broke out between the men during the confrontation, resulting in Matovu sustaining severe injuries.
“Preliminary information indicates that the incident may have resulted from a physical fight. The exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation, however, are yet to be fully established,” Ms Kawala said.
Following the assault, Matovu was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a Good Samaritan on a motorcycle. “Unfortunately, the deceased sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda-boda rider, where he later succumbed to the injuries,” Kawala added.
Detectives have since taken the woman, identified only as Rose Tumusiime, into custody to assist with the ongoing probe and help trace the fleeing suspect.
“Following the arrest of one female suspect—because we’ve arrested one female that is helping us in investigations who was in company of the deceased… The female suspect remains in police custody and is assisting our task team with the ongoing investigations, including efforts to trace and apprehend the male suspect, who has ably been identified and is believed to have fled the scene,” Kawala explained.
Investigators are currently focusing on tracking down the male suspect, who is believed to be employed by a local security firm.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect works with a private security company; however, we are yet to establish and verify,” Kawala noted, emphasizing that forensic and task teams are actively gathering evidence at the crime scene. “Our officers are on ground to ensure that they pick everything that can help us in our investigations. We are doing everything within our means to have the suspect arrested and brought to book.”
Sending condolences to the music fraternity and the nation at large, the police spokesperson assured the public that justice would be served.
“We continue with our investigations. We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and fans of Matovu Moses during this difficult time. However, we are going to do everything within our means to have the suspect arrested,” Kawala said.
