The president of the opposition People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been arrested after security operatives seized his residence in Wakaliga , Rubaga Division Kampala.
Details surrounding the operation and any case linked to his arrest are not immediately available.
Lukwago had been scheduled to appear on a television interview but later opted to conduct it from his residence, according to sources close to him.
Boda boda riders in the neighbourhood said they noticed security operatives driving in Toyota Hiace vehicles commonly known as drones in the area as early as 5:00 a.m. The occupants were seen dressed in military uniforms and civilian clothing.
Witnesses said the operatives entered the premises by scaling the perimeter fence before moving inside the compound of the opposition politician and lawyer, a long-time ally of detained veteran opposition figure Kizza Besigye.
A source inside the house said during the incident, said she heard loud commands from the operatives demanding to know Lukwago’s whereabouts.
In an apparent reference to the operation, Uganda’s military chief and First Son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, later posted on social media: “I have captured a FOOL and taken him to the basement!”
However, Kainerugaba did not identify the individual he was referring to, and it was not immediately clear whether the post was related to Lukwago’s reported arrest.
Neither the police nor other security agencies had immediately commented on the reported arrest by publication time. The circumstances surrounding the operation and any charges that may have prompted it could not be independently verified.
