Muhoozi Meets Nation Media Group Executives Amid Uncertainty Over Media Suspension

By Joseph Kiggundu

ENTEBBE — Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has met senior executives from Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda to discuss the status of the company’s suspended media operations in the country.

The meeting was held at the Special Forces Command headquarters in Entebbe and involved key figures from the media group, including businessman Rostam Aziz, his son Saam Aziz, and Georgia Mutagaywa, Chief of Staff at Taarifa Limited, a company linked to NMG’s activities in Uganda.

Sources familiar with the discussions said the talks centered on the continued suspension of NMG’s major media outlets, including NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor. The situation has attracted attention from media stakeholders and observers concerned about the future of independent journalism, regulatory requirements, and media licensing in Uganda.

The suspension of the outlets has reignited debate over the relationship between the media house and government authorities. NMG Uganda has, over the years, experienced a number of regulatory challenges and disputes with state institutions, often involving questions of compliance and editorial policy.

Past restrictions on the company’s operations generated significant public and political discussion, with many viewing the developments as part of a broader conversation about media freedom and the role of independent news organizations in Uganda.

Although the Entebbe meeting is seen as an important step toward dialogue between the parties, neither side had issued an official statement at the time of publication regarding the outcome of the discussions or the future of the suspended outlets.

Industry observers say the talks could play a significant role in shaping the next phase of NMG’s operations in Uganda. For now, audiences, employees, and other stakeholders remain waiting for official guidance on whether the affected media platforms will resume full operations or continue to face restrictions.
