KAMPALA — Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has promised to investigate the management of funds allocated to Uganda’s liberation war veterans, amid complaints that many former combatants have not benefited from government support.
Nabbanja made the commitment during a spiritual revival for fallen liberation fighters held at the Office of the National Chairman, as part of activities to commemorate President Yoweri Museveni’s birthday.
The gathering brought together veterans, families of fallen combatants, religious leaders and government officials to honour those who participated in the liberation struggle and reflect on the country’s current challenges.
Nabbanja said government had fulfilled its obligations to veterans but promised to establish what happened to funds that were released for their welfare and development.
“If the money was given to the veterans, we shall investigate who ate it,” Nabbanja said, warning that officials found responsible could face consequences.
Her remarks come amid renewed scrutiny of funds allocated to veterans. In June, President Museveni directed an audit of Shs231 billion that had been disbursed over the years to support veterans’ wealth-creation initiatives.
Several veterans who attended the revival expressed frustration over their living conditions, saying they had sacrificed for the country but had received limited benefits. Some appealed to President Museveni to consider employment opportunities for their children.
Calls for reconciliation
The Archbishop of Uganda, the Most Rev Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, was represented at the event by Rt Rev Elias Mayanja, who called for calm, forgiveness and reconciliation among political leaders.
Mayanja urged Ugandans to seek God’s guidance and mercy, saying the country should focus on peace and national development.
Senior Presidential Advisor in the Office of the National Chairman, Hajjat Hadijjah Namyalo Uzeiya, said the spiritual gathering was intended to honour the fallen combatants and reflect on the direction of the country.
She called for forgiveness and sought mercy for any mistakes made against the ideals that inspired the liberation struggle.
The veterans’ concerns come as government faces renewed demands for accountability over money allocated to former combatants, with the President previously directing authorities to establish how the funds were managed.
