KAMPALA. The Deputy President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for Eastern Uganda, John Baptist Nambeshe, has called on opposition-leaning legislators and “forces of change” to unite behind Paul Mwiru in the race for Speaker of Parliament.
Nambeshe made the remarks at the NUP headquarters on Friday , where party leaders gathered in solidarity ahead of Mwiru’s address to the media following his endorsement by the party earlier this week.
“As the official opposition, the National Unity Platform has provided leadership,” Nambeshe said. “I want to thank all the like-minded forces of change for the response they are giving. My ears have been on the ground, and Ugandans have not been sleeping. Please keep it up.”
He urged Members of Parliament who subscribe to the ideals of democratic governance and political change to rally behind Mwiru, describing his candidature as a symbol of unity among opposition forces.
Nambeshe said cooperation among opposition parties represented in Parliament would be critical in strengthening accountability, defending democracy, and advancing the interests of ordinary Ugandans during the 12th Parliament.
“We believe this is the time for all change-seeking leaders to stand together and support Paul Mwiru for Speaker,” he added.
Mwiru is expected to unveil his manifesto and vision for Parliament as campaigns for the top parliamentary leadership positions intensify ahead of the official opening of the 12th Parliament.
