KAMPALA.A total of 301 UPDF officers have been promoted to higher ranks ,indicating a step in career progression.

The promotions announced by the UPDF acting spokesperson, Col Chris Magezi have seen six Brigadier Generals promoted to the rank of Major General and among these Brig Gen Godwin Karugaba, Brig Gen Chris Musinguzi Bagonza, Brig Gen Michael Nyarwa, Brig Gen Richard Karemire, Brig Gen David Robert Gonyi and acting Maj Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga.

The promotions according to the UPDF have also seen 83 officers who were serving in acting capacities confirmed in their substantive ranks, while the probationary ranks of 89 Second Lieutenants were confirmed as Lieutenants.

“These promotions and confirmations strengthen leadership across all levels of the Force and ensure continuity in fulfilling the UPDF’s constitutional mandate to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Uganda,” Col. Magezi said in a statement on Tuesday.

The UPDF says the promotion is part of the army’s efforts to enhance leadership and operational effectiveness within the force.

The promotions are also part of the efforts to implement the UPDF Establishment 2021 which marks a significant leap in the evolution of Uganda’s armed forces.

To support the new structure, in the UPDF Establishment 2021, the Ugandan army has since 2024 implemented significant changes in its command offices, aligning several functions and designations with the updated framework.

This meant that some officers serving in key command positions were required to hold ranks that matched the offices they occupied. Since they had not yet attained those ranks, they served in acting capacities until they were formally promoted to the appropriate substantive ranks.
