KAMPALA — Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga has called for a shift away from traditional landfill methods of waste disposal, saying modern technologies can provide more sustainable ways of managing garbage.

Balimwezo said landfills had become an outdated approach to waste management, particularly at a time when Kampala is facing limited space for waste disposal.

He made the remarks while addressing the five mayors and political leaders of Kampala at City Hall during a leadership seminar organised to sensitise city leaders on improved waste management practices.

According to Balimwezo, continued reliance on landfills has created challenges for communities where such facilities are located, with residents bearing the effects of waste accumulation.

“There is no need to advocate for landfills anymore because we even lack the space to dump garbage,” Balimwezo said.

He said Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) was exploring technology that can process waste and convert it into useful products, potentially creating employment opportunities and other economic benefits.

Balimwezo said the approach could transform garbage from a public health and environmental challenge into an economic resource.

He added that the authority had embarked on a sensitisation campaign targeting political and community leaders, encouraging them to educate residents about modern waste-management initiatives and the potential economic opportunities they could create.

The Lord Mayor urged city leaders to support efforts aimed at improving waste management and encourage communities to participate in initiatives that promote waste recovery, recycling and value addition.
