Orientation for 12th Parliament MPs Kicks Off as Clerk Urges Active Participation

By Joseph Mary Buwule

The three-day orientation programme for Members of the 12th Parliament has officially commenced at the Parliamentary South Parking Lot, marking the beginning of structured onboarding for newly elected legislators.

The programme, organised at the start of each parliamentary term, is designed to help new Members of Parliament adapt to their responsibilities and understand the workings of the House.

According to Parliament of Uganda, the initiative seeks to familiarise MPs with the institutional culture, legislative framework, and organisational structure of the institution. This is intended to ensure that members are well-equipped to effectively execute their constitutional mandate and navigate parliamentary systems and procedures.

In his welcoming remarks, the Clerk to Parliament, Parliament of Uganda, Hon. Adolf Mwesige, urged the new legislators to actively participate in the training sessions, noting that the orientation is key to improving their effectiveness in service delivery.

He emphasised that full engagement would enable MPs to better understand parliamentary processes and enhance their contribution to legislative work.

The Deputy Speaker also addressed the new Members of Parliament, pledging equal and fair treatment to all MPs on the floor of the House, regardless of political affiliation or background.

“Each of us must be treated equally because they came with the mandate of the people,” he said, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity and respect for diverse opinions in parliamentary proceedings.

The orientation programme is expected to run for three days, covering key areas including legislative procedures, ethics, and the operational systems of Parliament as the 12th Parliament officially begins its work.
