There are several petitions against Ms Among- IGG

KAMPALA.The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has officially launched a preliminary inquiry into the wealth and actions of the outgoing Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among. The development introduces a new legal front for the embattled legislator, following days of intense security operations targeted at her properties and office.

Confirming the development, Inspector General of Government (IGG) Lady Justice Aisha Naluzze Batala revealed that the ombudsman’s office is responding to escalating public and legal pressure.

“We have received several petitions against former Speaker Anita Among and have commenced preliminary investigations. We can’t divulge any information prematurely,” Batala stated.

The IGG’s confirmation coincides with dramatic events unfolding at Parliament on Tuesday. Heavily armed police and State House detectives sealed off and searched the offices of the former Speaker and the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige Kasaija. The raid, reportedly sanctioned by President Yoweri Museveni, follows weekend searches at Among’s private residences in Nakasero, Ntinda, and Kigo. Investigators are pursuing leads related to corruption, abuse of office, and money laundering.

The current probe stands in sharp contrast to the Inspectorate’s historical handling of allegations against the high-profile politicians. When youth-led anti-corruption protests and digital exhibitions rattled the August House, demanding accountability for parliamentary exhibition expenditures, the public met institutional resistance.

The army deployed heavily and arrested hundreds of protestors.

Under previous leadership, the Inspectorate faced intense scrutiny from opposition figures and civil society for its perceived reluctance to aggressively pursue the leadership of the 11th Parliament. In early 2025, the IG had even cleared Among of wrongdoing regarding controversial property allegations in the United Kingdom.

The political calculus shifted drastically following the conclusion of the 12th Parliament’s swearing-in ceremonies. Stripped of the political protection of the Speakership and facing a concerted pressure campaign from top government and military echelons, the former Speaker now finds her asset declarations the primary focus of the leadership code enforcement.
