Two female learners killed as landslide buries family in Kisoro

Kisoro — A devastating landslide claimed the lives of two female learners and injured two elderly persons in Murora Sub-county, Kisoro District, in the early hours of Sunday, May 3, 2026.

The tragedy occurred at around 5 a.m. in Nyabiyonga Village, Kibumba Parish, when a house was partially buried by soil from a nearby hill. Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident, identifying the deceased as 14-year-old Musoni Brenda and 12-year-old Mujawimana Eseri, both pupils and residents of Bukerahe Village in Chibumba Parish.

Preliminary investigations reveal the girls had gone to check on their grandparents and were spending the school holidays with them. While the four occupants were asleep, the landslide struck, burying part of the house and suffocating the two girls.

The elderly survivors, Mulema Benon (70) and Mbaboneye Avelina (60), the girls’ grandparents, managed to escape with minor injuries and were taken to Chahafi Health Centre for treatment.

Police and local residents responded swiftly, helping to retrieve the bodies from the debris and documenting the scene. Postmortems were conducted to confirm the cause of death.

Maate commended the community for their timely rescue efforts and urged residents in hilly and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
