UMSC mourns Hajj Badru Bunkeddeko

By Sulaiman Kauki

KAMPALA.His Eminence Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, the Mufti of Uganda, on his own behalf and on behalf of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran community social worker and prominent businessman, Hajj Badru Bunkeddeko.
The late Hajj Bunkeddeko was a distinguished entrepreneur and community leader who spearheaded the formation of the Uganda Chamber of Commerce in 1989, becoming its founding President. Under his leadership, the Chamber brought together business people who played a significant role in importing essential commodities during the early years of the NRM government led by President Yoweri Museveni. Their efforts helped stabilize supplies at a time when Uganda was recovering from years of conflict and economic collapse following the 1980–1986 bush war.

Hajj Bunkeddeko was also the only Muslim among the founding pioneers of educational centres for the deaf in Uganda. He dedicated much of his adult life to advancing the education and welfare of children and young people with hearing impairments. These institutions have made a lasting contribution by equipping learners with vocational skills, including carpentry, tailoring, and other trades, enabling them to lead more independent and productive lives.

The Mufti praised Haj Bunkeddeko for leaving behind a rich and enduring legacy of community service, entrepreneurship, and empowerment through education and skills development.
In his condolence message to the bereaved family, friends, and colleagues, the Mufti urged them to remain steadfast, courageous, and united during this difficult period as they mourn a gallant son of Uganda.
He also beseeched Almighty Allah to grant the deceased His infinite mercy, forgive his shortcomings, and admit him into Jannatul Firdaus.

Haj Badru Bunkeddeko has been laid to rest at his ancestral home in Kikunyu, Butambala District, on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
