KALANGALA. Airtel Uganda has expanded its network footprint in the Kalangala Islands with the commissioning of two new 4G sites, part of a nationwide push to close coverage gaps and improve service quality.
The latest installations among 180 new sites rolled out across the country this year extend coverage to several villages on Bugala Island, including Buyindi, Bumanji, Kizira, Lunsi, Kasenyi, Kyagwima, Njoga and Buyiri.
Presiding over the commissioning, Kalangala Deputy Resident District Commissioner Henry Ssebunya welcomed the investment, saying the district had battled persistent network problems.
“We thank Airtel Uganda for thinking about the people of Bugala Island and Kalangala,” Ssebunya said. “We have long struggled with network challenges in these areas, and this upgrade will greatly support our community in business, communication and innovation.”
Airtel’s 4G network already covers Bukasa, Bubeke, Kitobo and parts of Bugala Island. The company says the new sites are aimed at strengthening voice and data reliability for remote communities that remain heavily underserved.
Musa Gava, Airtel Uganda’s business territory manager for Kalangala, said the expansion reflects the operator’s commitment to improving service access across Uganda.
“We are excited to commission the 10th site here in Kalangala,” Gava said. “Our customers can now enjoy a much better experience on our network. We listened to the concerns about poor connectivity, and this upgrade is our response.”
Gava said improved network quality was expected to support economic activity on the islands. “These network upgrades will not only improve connectivity but also give a boost to local businesses,” he said. “With better access to calls, SMS, data, financial services and the internet, Kalangala’s community can look forward to real growth and new opportunities.”
Airtel Uganda’s latest financial results show the company serves 17.9 million subscribers, including 7.5 million data users growth the company says highlights rising demand for reliable digital services.
“Our continued investment in network infrastructure will ensure improved quality of service and value for money,” Gava said. “These upgrades will support economic activity, enhance access to essential services such as healthcare and education, and strengthen social and digital inclusion across Uganda.”
