KAMPALA.The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a stop order to Siia Fusion Uganda Limited, located in Nakapinyi South Village, Kasenge Parish, Nama Sub-County, Mukono District, following complaints from residents over toxic emissions linked to the death of more than 16 cattle, crop damage, and serious health risks.
According to Nema, inspections found that the facility lacked a proper system for handling lead ash and other hazardous waste, contrary to the National Environment (Waste Management) Regulations, 2020. It also lacked adequate pollution control systems for its lead recycling activities. Air quality measurements recorded PM2.5 levels of 112 µg/m³, above the permissible limit of 35 µg/m³ under the National Environment (Air Quality Standards) Regulations, 2024.
Nema said the facility also violated conditions in its Environmental and Social Impact Assessment certificate.
