Shock as four Ugandan fishermen are shot dead in South Sudan

NIMULE.At least four people are confirmed to have died Thursday evening, and others left injured when gunmen opened fire at Ugandans who were reportedly fishing in the White Nile in the neighbouring South Sudan.

The victims, who include a baby, are said to have been attacked by unknown assailants at Fula Rapids, near Nimule.

Uganda’s North West Nile region police spokesperson, Mr Collins Asea, said the victims were reportedly tied to a tree after their arrest and shot dead.

“It’s not yet clear whether the gunmen are South Sudanese government forces or rebels,” Mr Asea told Newzzone Publication Ltd .

He said the number of the injured is yet to be established. Some of them are admitted at Moyo General Hospital for treatment.

Police promised to provide more details after the investigation is complete.

In August 2009, Sudanese gunmen attacked an MTN construction worker at Jale in Moyo District.

In September 2009, seven SPLA soldiers attacked farmers in Gwere Village in Lefori Sub-county, Moyo District, claiming the land belonged to Sudan.

In November 2010, SPLA soldiers arrested 13 farmers from Gwere village in Lefori Sub-county and took them hostage, accusing them of encroaching on Sudanese land.

In March 2012, nine Ugandan MPs were held hostage by SPLA soldiers in Lefori as they went on a fact-finding mission on the disputed land.

In March 2018, gunmen from South Sudan attacked families in Padiga village in Metu Sub-county, Moyo District and raided 836 animals. During the pursuit, a UPDF soldier was shot dead.

In July 2025, UPDF and South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) clashed at Fitina Mbaya and Goboro villages after soldiers from South Sudan allegedly established a detach 200 metres inside Yumbe District, Uganda.
