Uganda Pushes Citizens to Seize Rising Opportunities in the Oil and Gas Sector

Ugandans have been encouraged to strategically prepare for a surge in economic opportunities as the country enters a new phase of its oil and gas journey, with first oil expected in 2026.

Speaking at the sixth Annual National Content Conference in Kampala, officials highlighted that Uganda is transitioning from major construction works to the production stage a shift expected to unlock thousands of jobs, business contracts and domestic investment prospects.

JohnBosco Habumugisha, the Deputy Executive Director of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Company, said the sector is at a turning point and urged Ugandans, especially the youth and local enterprises to ready themselves for long term involvement in the industry.

He noted that while the promise of oil has generated excitement, it is true value will depend on how the country manages and reinvests the revenues.

“Oil money is neither a blessing nor a curse,” Habumugisha remarked. “The real test lies in how effectively we convert oil revenues into national development.”

Over the past few years, Uganda has focused on putting in place the required infrastructure including the East African Crude Oil Pipeline stretching from Hoima to Tanga, as well as processing and support facilities. With construction nearing completion, attention is now turning to production, operations and local participation.

Officials explained that many of the new opportunities will come from services and supply chains that support the production phase ranging from engineering and logistics to hospitality, construction, ICT and specialised technical work.

Already, a significant share of key contracts has been awarded to Ugandan companies, signalling growing confidence in local capacity. With continued training, certification and enterprise development, more local businesses are expected to compete effectively for upcoming tenders.
