Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party flag bearer Florence Namayanja has secured a second term as Masaka City mayor after defeating four male contenders in the January 22 local government elections.
Ms Namayanja,a former legislator representing Bukoto East Constituency in Masaka District was early Friday morning declared winner by Masaka City Returning Officer Ahmed Nadduli Musisi after polling 22,568 votes, comfortably beating her closest challenger, National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Fredrick Ddembe Kipapaali, who garnered 9,032 votes.
Michael Mulindwa Nakumusaana of the Democratic Front (DF) came third with 4,933 votes, while independents Godfrey Kayemba Afaayo and Francis Ssengabi trailed with 761 and 60 votes, respectively.
Speaking to journalists shortly after her declaration, Namayanja thanked residents for renewing their mandate and pledged to consolidate development projects initiated during her first term.
“I thank the people of Masaka City for choosing me again. The votes show that residents have been following what we have been doing,” she said, adding: “We are going to continue working on city roads, drainage channels, greening the city and improving service delivery.”
