Jubilation as 4,996 Uganda Prisons Service junior officers get promotions

KAMPALA. The Uganda Prisons Service has promoted 4,996 junior officers across multiple ranks following approval by the 36th Prisons Council, in a move aimed at strengthening the institution’s human resource capacity.

In a press statement dated on April 29, 2026, the Service spokesperson, Frank Baine , said the promotions span ranks from Principal Officer I to Warder and Wardress.

“The Commissioner General of the Uganda Prisons Service has promoted a total of 4,996 junior officers from the rank of Principal Officer I to Warder/Wardress following the approval of the 36th Prisons Council,” the statement read.

According to the breakdown, 139 officers were promoted to Principal Officer I, 196 to Principal Officer II, 201 to Chief Warder/Wardress I, 204 to Chief Warder/Wardress II, and 432 to Chief Warder/Wardress III.

A further 1,512 officers rose to Sergeant Warder/Wardress, 633 to Corporal Warder/Wardress, and 1,679 to Lance Corporal Warder/Wardress.
The Commissioner General commended the officers for their service, saying the promotions reflect their commitment and discipline.
“Their dedication, discipline and commitment to duty have been duly recognized,” the statement said. “He encouraged them to maintain high standards of professionalism and to continue striving for excellence in the execution of their duties.”
The Service said the promotions were based on available vacancies within its structure.
“The promotions were based on available vacancies in accordance with the Prisons structure. Officers who were not promoted in this cycle will be considered in the next round,” the statement added.
Authorities say the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to enhance professionalism and operational efficiency within the prisons service.
