Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening engagement with citizens living abroad, with a renewed focus on regional integration, investment opportunities, and economic empowerment through organized diaspora groups.
Speaking at the closing of the First Uganda Diaspora Convention in Malawi, Ambassador Col. (Rtd.) Fred Mwesigye of the Uganda High Commission in Dar es Salaam emphasized the importance of the Ugandan diaspora in national development and called on Ugandans living abroad to unite through Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) in order to benefit from targeted government support programmes.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uganda, Ambassador Mwesigye said the Government of Uganda remains committed to deepening diaspora engagement while improving regional integration and infrastructure to ease movement, trade, and investment opportunities for Ugandans living and working across the region.
He noted that organized diaspora communities can play a critical role in supporting economic transformation through investment, remittances, skills transfer, and promotion of Uganda abroad.
The ambassador further encouraged Ugandans in Malawi and across the Southern African region to work together in organized groups that can easily access government initiatives aimed at supporting Ugandans in the diaspora.
The convention concluded with a colorful cultural networking reception that showcased Ugandan heritage through traditional cuisine, music, and entertainment. Participants used the occasion to strengthen social and business connections while celebrating Ugandan culture and identity abroad.
The event brought together members of the Ugandan diaspora, diplomats, and community leaders, highlighting the growing importance of diaspora communities in contributing to Uganda’s socio-economic development and international relations.
