KAMPALA, 6 August 2026 — The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged members of the Buganda Lukiiko to embrace smarter ways of working in order to improve service delivery and effectively implement the Kabaka’s development agenda.

Mayiga made the remarks while opening a two-day retreat for Lukiiko representatives at Mutesa I Royal University in Mengo-Kakeeka, Kampala.

He emphasized that working smart involves making better use of information and communication technology (ICT) in carrying out kingdom programmes and assignments.

The Katikkiro cited the “Ente ya Kabaka” campaign, which encourages every household to keep at least one cow, as an example of a modern development initiative. He said the programme is intended to support the Emmwanyi Terimba coffee campaign by providing manure for coffee farming and creating additional income for families.

Mayiga also encouraged Lukiiko representatives to mobilise Buganda subjects to participate in industrialisation and international trade, saying such ventures can promote innovation, entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

He urged citizens not to fear starting businesses, stressing that enterprise is an important path to economic empowerment.

In addition, the Katikkiro called for a change in public attitudes toward vocational education, urging kingdom legislators to promote technical and vocational studies as valuable opportunities for skills development and employment.

The retreat is expected to focus on strategies for strengthening implementation of the Kabaka’s programmes and improving the performance of Lukiiko representatives across Buganda Kingdom.
