Martha Karua Denied Entry into Uganda Ahead of Besigye, Lutale Legal Proceedings

KAMPALA – Kenyan Senior Counsel and former Justice Minister Hon. Martha Karua has reportedly been denied entry into Uganda after arriving at Entebbe International Airport, according to a statement issued by the Uganda Law Society.

The Uganda Law Society said that Karua, who is part of the legal team representing opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale, was ordered to return to her country without being provided with reasons for the decision.

In a statement posted on social media, the legal body described the development as a matter of concern, noting that Karua had travelled to Uganda in her capacity as lead counsel for the two clients.

“Dr. Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale’s lead-counsel Hon. Martha Karua, SC, was denied entry at Entebbe International Airport. She has been ordered to return and given no reason,” the Uganda Law Society said.

The society further revealed that Karua was accompanied by the President of the Law Society of Kenya, Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama, who was allowed entry into Uganda.

The circumstances surrounding Karua’s denial of entry remained unclear by press time, with no official statement yet issued by Ugandan immigration authorities explaining the decision.

Karua, a prominent Kenyan lawyer and politician, has in recent years been involved in several high-profile legal and governance matters across the East African region.

The incident is likely to spark debate among legal practitioners, human rights advocates, and political observers regarding cross-border legal representation and access to justice within the East African Community.

Authorities had not publicly commented on the matter by the time of filing this report.
