KAMPALA – Ugandan comedian Yokana Mbuuse, popularly known as Kapere, has died at a hospital in Buddo, marking the loss of one of the entertainers who helped shape the country’s comedy scene.
His death was announced by media personality Kasuku in a post on X, although details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain unclear.
“Comedian Kapere is gone. He has passed on at a hospital in Buddo,” Kasuku wrote.
The hospital where Kapere died and the cause of death had not been disclosed by the time of publication. Funeral arrangements were also yet to be announced.
Kapere rose to prominence as a member of the Amarula Family comedy group, which became popular for its humorous performances and distinctive style. He worked alongside fellow comedians Allan Mujuni, popularly known as Amooti, and Nicholas Mpiirwe, widely recognised as Messe Bontwe.

His journey into entertainment was marked by personal challenges, which he eventually turned into an opportunity to build a career in comedy.
In a 2013 interview with the Daily Monitor, Kapere recounted how an unexpected encounter with a taxi driver opened the door to his entry into comedy. He also spoke about overcoming ridicule over his physical appearance and using the experience to develop his identity as a performer.
Away from the stage, Kapere also attracted public attention through his personal life. A Daily Monitor profile published on February 12, 2026, highlighted his relationship with Lydia Nakandi, with whom he had shared 14 years. The couple spoke about their relationship and the prejudice they had encountered.
Kapere’s death marks the departure of a comedian whose performances and personal story made him a recognisable figure in Uganda’s entertainment industry.
