KAMPALA. Embattled former Leader of Opposition in Parliament Mathias Mpuuga and Nyendo Mukungwe legislator has formed his political party nearly two years after parting ways with National Unity Platform (NUP).
The Democratic Front (DF) party, according to Mpuuga, is deliberate in bringing freshness to Uganda’s political landscape.
“It is born out of our motherland’s need for meaningful transformation that transcends the tired cycle of recycled ideologies,” Mr Mpuuga posted on X, formerly Twitter on Tuesday .
Mpuuga says the new party is coming not to disrupt, but that it is born out of necessity because of the failures of the status quo. “It is a home for logical thinkers, progressive minds, and those who believe in political ethics and disciplined service delivery”.
The formation of DF comes barely six months before the campaigns for the 2026 general election start. Last December Mpuuga ,also a commissioner in Parliament formed Democratic Alliance , a political grouping where he serves as the coordinator but it has failed to gather traction in the last since months . Musician Alien Skin who was unveiled as DA ambassador at the launch in Kampala on December 5 is a non-starter on the political scene and has never appeared on any platform selling the ideals of the organisation .

According to a certificate of registration issued by the Electoral Commission under the Political Parties and Organisations Act Cap 178, DF has morphed from the Green Partisan Party.
The certificate, dated May 5, 2025, is signed by Electoral Commission secretary.
The bad blood between NUP leadership and Mpuuga stemmed from the controversial Shs500m “service award’’ that the latter received while still servicing as Leaders of Opposition in Parliament in May 2022.
Mpuuga has since rejected calls to resign as demanded by NUP leadership , arguing that he deserved the one-off award and that it was not criminal.
