UNCCI Urges African Leaders to End DR Congo Conflict

UNCCI President Olive Kigongo

Kampala, Uganda

The Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI) has called on African leaders to take decisive action in ending the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), citing its devastating impact on regional trade and economic stability.

The security situation in North Kivu and Ituri provinces has deteriorated significantly, with renewed fighting between government forces and armed groups displacing hundreds of thousands of people. The worsening crisis, coupled with intercommunal conflicts, has further destabilized the region and negatively affected businesses.

Economic Impact on Uganda and East Africa

In a press statement released today, UNCCI President Olive Kigongo emphasized the critical role of a stable DRC in the economic prosperity of East Africa.

“Over the past several years, the escalating conflict in eastern DRC has devastated local businesses, hindered trade, and destroyed vital infrastructure,” Kigongo stated.

She pointed out that Uganda and the broader East African region depend heavily on DRC’s resources and market access, making its stability essential for economic growth. The disruption of trade, mining, and agriculture in the DRC has led to significant losses for industries and communities across the region.

Call for Regional Intervention

UNCCI is urging the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to intensify diplomatic efforts and pursue sustainable peace-building initiatives. The Chamber is advocating for:
✅ Dialogue between the Congolese government, local communities, and rebel groups.
✅ Stronger regional collaboration to address security concerns and restore stability.
✅ Increased support for rebuilding critical infrastructure and reviving industries affected by the conflict.

“Governments must come together to secure the region’s future by ending this conflict,” Kigongo stressed. “The effects of the DRC’s instability have reached beyond its borders, impacting our economy, our people, and our collective future. We urge our regional partners, including SADC and EAC, to prioritize peace-building and support the restoration of trade and commerce in the region.”

With the DRC being a key economic partner in trade, investment, and regional integration, UNCCI’s call highlights the urgent need for political and economic solutions to ensure lasting peace and prosperity.
