NRM primaries aftermath: Lwengo District Chairperson faces attempted murder, robbery charges

MASAKA. Lwengo District Chairperson, Mr Ibrahim Kitatta is facing four counts including attempted murder and robbery.
Mr Kitatta was presented before Masaka Chief Magistrate Simon Ntoroko on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Prosecution led by Ms Mariam Njuki, the charges stem from events that occurred on July 14 2025, during the recently concluded National Resistance Movement primaries.
He is accused of robbing Ms Liyaada Nakanwagi of her mobile phone, attempting to kill Mr David Ssebuguzi, the LCI Chairperson of Kanakulya Zone, robbing him of his mobile phone, and stealing Shs900,000 from one Musa Kataze.

Through his lawyer Eddie Sansa, Kitatta presented three sureties in court including Mr Vincent Birimuye, the Lwengo District Vice Chairperson, Mr Peregrino Ssenozi, the District Speaker and Mr Abdul Musa Mpagi, the Town Clerk of Kinoni Town Council, who is also Kitatta’s brother.

However, Ms Njuki objected to the bail application, arguing that Kitatta might interfere with the witnesses and evidence.
Presiding magistrate Simon Ntoroko overruled the prosecution’s objection, stating that the accused is a responsible public official with a fixed place of abode and had presented credible sureties.

He granted Kitatta a cash bail of Shs1 million, while each surety was given a non-cash bail of Shs10 million.
The magistrate also urged the state to expedite its case to ensure timely justice for all parties involved.

Meanwhile, the complainants expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s decision to grant Kitatta bail, claiming that their lives remain at risk due to ongoing threats.
The case has been adjourned to November 20 2025.
