KAMPALA — Ugandan kickboxer Patricia Apolot has dismissed allegations linking her husband, retired Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu, to plans to organise an armed rebellion, insisting that he travelled to Kampala for prayer and has been away from home for about two weeks.
Apolot, who married the former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces in 2017, said her husband occasionally spends extended periods in prayer, describing his latest absence as consistent with a routine familiar to their family.
She made the remarks following a security operation at their home in Awoja, Soroti District, where personnel reportedly questioned her about Elwelu’s whereabouts.
According to Apolot, Elwelu left for Kampala saying he intended to devote time to prayer but had not returned. She rejected suggestions that he could be involved in plans to take up arms against the government, describing him as a man committed to peace and who had looked forward to retirement.
“My husband is innocent and cannot, even for a minute, think of starting a rebellion. He loves Uganda, and his dream is to have a peaceful country,” she said.
Apolot said the security personnel arrived at the residence at about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, with some dressed in military uniform and others in civilian clothes. She alleged that they took her two mobile phones and those belonging to her sisters during the operation.
She further claimed that the people at the residence were kept indoors for several days and that her movements were restricted while security personnel remained at the home. She said she was eventually allowed to leave to purchase food and maintained that she had not been physically assaulted.
The kickboxer also disputed reports that firearms and ammunition had been recovered from the property, insisting that no weapons were found. She explained that the soldiers who usually provided security at their home had been sent on leave before Elwelu travelled to Kampala, saying this had happened during previous periods when he went away to pray.
Apolot also defended activities at the couple’s other residence in Anyara, Kalaki District, saying it had been used to host worshippers rather than to facilitate any rebel activities.
Elwelu, a retired senior military officer, has reportedly been sought in connection with allegations of organising an armed rebellion. Apolot’s remarks represent her account of his absence and the events at their home; the allegations against him have not been independently established in the information provided.
