Buganda Clan Leader Urges Event Managers to Preserve Cultural Dignity

By Nasser Kayanja

Traditional event managers have been urged to focus on adding cultural value to ceremonies and avoid turning them into comedic spectacles.

This call was made by the Head of Clans in Buganda Kingdom, Omutaka Augustine Kizito Mutumba Namwama, during his closing remarks at a two-day retreat for event managers held at Bulange, Mengo in Kampala.

Omutaka Mutumba cautioned against trivializing cultural functions, emphasizing that traditional ceremonies should be handled with respect and authenticity. He stressed the importance of maintaining the dignity of customs, noting that excessive entertainment and comedy can undermine the significance of such events.

He also revealed plans for clan leaders (Bataka) to train funeral service managers on proper conduct during traditional funerals and burial rites, ensuring that these ceremonies are carried out in line with cultural expectations.

According to Kajja Ismail, Chairman of Abalungamya Bokumikolo United Associations Ltd, more than 30 event managers have undergone training. The sessions covered how to manage ceremonies across various cultures, including the Bamadaba, Banyankole, and Basiga communities.

In addition, Omutaka Mutumba discouraged excessive excitement during traditional functions, particularly among performers and artists. He warned that over-dancing and exaggerated performances can be inappropriate and, at times, embarrassing—especially to elders attending these events.

He concluded by urging all stakeholders to uphold respect, professionalism, and cultural integrity in the management of traditional ceremonies.
