The MTN Uganda has contributed Shs20 million towards preparations for this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations.
The donation was handed over to leaders of Catholic Diocese of Kasese which was selected to organize this national event which usually falls on June 3 at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, attracting thousands of pilgrims from across Uganda and beyond.
The diocese is currently working to raise about Shs2 billion from a total budget of Shs4.5 billion required to successfully host the event.
Speaking during the handover, MTN Uganda’s Western Regional Commercial Head Andrew Tusubira said the contribution reflects the company’s commitment to supporting national and spiritual events that bring communities together.
“As MTN Uganda, we are proud to contribute to the preparations of this important national and spiritual event. We recognize the role it plays in bringing people together in faith and unity,” he said.
He added that MTN Uganda will also support pilgrims travelling from Kasese by providing drinking water and reflector jackets to enhance safety along the journey.
“We shall also provide drinking water and reflector jackets to ensure pilgrims are well hydrated and visible on the road as they travel,” Tusubira said.
The Bishop of Kasese Diocese, Francis Kibira, welcomed the contribution, describing it as timely support that will help close the financial gap facing organisers.
“We are grateful to MTN Uganda for this timely contribution. It is a significant step towards bridging the financial gap we are facing,” he said.
He called on other organisations, well-wishers, and faithful to contribute towards the remaining balance to ensure successful celebrations.
Uganda Martyrs Day remains one of the country’s most significant religious events, commemorating Christian converts who were executed for their faith in the late 19th century. The annual pilgrimage to Namugongo continues to draw large crowds, with many believers travelling long distances on foot as a demonstration of devotion.
With preparations ongoing, organisers say they remain hopeful that collective support will ensure a successful and spiritually meaningful celebration this year.
