Former Butambala County Member of Parliament Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has been remanded to prison on fresh charges of incitement to violence and managing an unlawful society.
Kivumbi, whose whereabouts had reportedly been unknown for the past three weeks, was on Wednesday morning taken to Nateete Police Station in Kampala before being transferred to Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court.
According to the prosecution, the 52-year-old politician, who also serves as the National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President for the Buganda Region, allegedly addressed a public gathering on July 9, 2026, and incited violence against the Government of Uganda. Prosecutors claim he urged members of the public to support a plan to wage war against the government.
He was further charged with managing an unlawful gathering at Bugoye Village in Gombe Ward, Butambala District.
The prosecution alleges that Kivumbi encouraged members of the public to rise up and unlawfully overthrow the government.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Deo Ssejjemba, Kivumbi denied all the charges. The court subsequently remanded him to Kitalya Prison, where he had previously been detained before being released on July 8, 2026.
Kivumbi was first remanded by the same court in January this year on terrorism-related charges linked to the deaths of more than seven people at his home in Butambala District.
The case was adjourned to August 11, 2026, as police investigations continue.
