The Lord Mayor of Kampala has expressed concern over the slow progress of ongoing road construction projects across the city, warning contractors and project supervisors that continued delays will attract penalties as stipulated in their contracts.
The warning was issued during a joint inspection of the road works, which brought together the Resident City Commissioner (RCC) for Kampala, Hajjati Minsa Kabanda Muwonge (Hon. Muwiya); Deputy Lord Mayor Faridah Nakabugo; City Speaker Salim Uhuru; Minister for Finance Dr. Shamim Nambassa; Minister for Social Services Dr. Hanifah Nalukwago; KCCA Manager for Roads Eng. Andrew Serunjoji; Authority Councillor Kalyango; Councillor Bahati, as well as other political leaders and technical officials.
During the inspection, the Lord Mayor directed consultants, KCCA project managers and contractors to speed up the implementation of the projects, emphasizing that failure to meet the agreed timelines would result in liquidated damages in line with the contract agreements.
The Kampala RCC also urged the contractors to intensify work and ensure the projects are completed on schedule to minimise inconvenience to road users and city residents.
Responding to the concerns, the contractors pledged to recover the lost time by extending working hours, including introducing night shifts, to accelerate construction and deliver the projects within the agreed timeframe.
