Masaka Marathon set for May 30 to promote tourism, culture and development

MASAKA. The annual Uganda Marathon usually held in Masaka has been renamed the Masaka Marathon.

The move, according to organisers is aimed at strengthening the identity of the event and bringing it closer to the people of Masaka and the wider Greater Masaka region. The event is slated for May 30.

According to Masaka City Mayor,Ms Florence Namayanja, the rebranding is expected to raise the international profile of Masaka as the event continues to attract runners from different parts of the world.

“We do not want this marathon to remain just another ordinary sporting event. Renaming it the Masaka Marathon gives our people a sense of ownership and pride,” she said.

“When athletes and visitors from different countries come to Masaka City , they will not only participate in the race but will also experience our culture, hospitality, and the beauty of our city. This is a great opportunity to market Masaka to the world,” she added.

Leaders in Masaka City, led by Mayor Namayanja, have already launched campaigns to sell marathon jerseys across the Greater Masaka sub-region, beginning with Masaka City itself, as part of mobilization efforts ahead of the event.

One of the organizers, Mr Meddie Katugga, said proceeds from the marathon will support persons with disabilities by providing them with essential needs and services.

“Unlike many other marathons, this event is designed to be inclusive. Persons with disabilities will also take part in the race and fully enjoy the experience alongside everyone else,” Katugga explained.

“The money raised will go a long way in improving their lives by providing some of the resources and assistance they need on a daily basis,” he added.

Residents of Masaka have welcomed the initiative, saying the marathon will help improve the image of the region and attract more tourists and investment opportunities in the future.

One resident, Mr Ronald Kibedi, said the marathon comes at a time when Masaka is ready to redefine its public image.

“No doubt this marathon will open up new opportunities for the city and help connect Masaka to the rest of the world through sports, tourism, and cultural exchange,” he said.
