KAMPALA, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has expressed gratitude to God and medical professionals for saving the life of First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni following a serious health challenge earlier this year.

In a heartfelt message marking Mrs. Museveni’s 78th birthday on June 24, the President revealed that the First Lady experienced a major health setback on March 21, 2026. He said she is now recovering well after receiving treatment and support from medical experts.

Although the President did not disclose details of the illness, he noted that the First Lady’s recovery is progressing steadily and attributed it to God’s grace and the efforts of healthcare professionals.

The birthday message also reflected on the couple’s long journey together, recalling how they reconnected in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1972 during a period when Museveni was living in exile. He described the reunion as a significant moment that eventually led to the growth of their family.

President Museveni praised his wife for her dedication to family, public service, and national development over the years. He highlighted her role in raising their children during Uganda’s liberation struggle, as well as her contributions to humanitarian work through the Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO).

He also commended her involvement in politics, community development, and religious activities, noting that she has made a lasting impact on many lives through her service and leadership.

The President concluded his message by expressing gratitude for the years they have shared together and his hope that they will continue to celebrate many more milestones while contributing to Uganda’s progress and regional integration efforts.

Janet Museveni, born on June 24, 1948, has served as Uganda’s First Lady since 1986 and currently serves as Minister of Education and Sports. Over the years, she has held several leadership positions, including Minister for Karamoja Affairs, while championing education, social welfare, and community empowerment initiatives across the country.
