The Ministry of Works and Transport has suspended operations of MV Obongi, the ferry serving the Obongi-Sinyanya crossing between Obongi and Adjumani districts, after the vessel developed a technical fault.
In a public notice issued on June 13, Permanent Secretary Waiswa Bageya said the suspension took immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice.
“The vessel has developed a technical fault requiring immediate attention,” Mr Bageya said, adding that the decision was taken in the interest of public safety.
The ministry said technical teams had been deployed to carry out maintenance and repairs on the ferry before services can resume.
Authorities said the public would be informed once the vessel is cleared for operations.
In the meantime, travellers have been advised to use alternative routes, including Kampala–Gulu–Adjumani–MV Laropi Ferry–Moyo–Obongi and Kampala–Pakwach Bridge–Nebbi–Arua–Koboko–Yumbe–Moyo–Obongi.
The suspension is expected to affect movement of people and goods between Obongi, Adjumani and Moyo districts, where river transport remains a key link for access to services and trade.
MV Obongi is one of the major ferry services operating along the River Nile in the West Nile sub-region.
