
KAMPALA. The Office of the Clerk to Parliament has scheduled May 25, 2026 as the date on which the newly sworn-in Members of Parliament shall elect their Speaker and Deputy Speaker to steer the House for the next five years.
In the announcement delivered by Mr Peter Odeke, who serves in the office of the Clerk at Parliament, it was also stated that this shall be the first business the 12th Parliament conducts.
“After the swearing in of Members of Parliament, the first business shall be conducted on the May 12 when they shall elect their Speaker and Deputy Speaker,” Mr Odeke said in a Wednesday announcement delivered at the tail-end of first half day break of day one of swearing in ceremony at Parliament.
By 11:40am when Parliament broke off for lunch session, at least 95 incoming Members of Parliament had taken oath. These included the Bukedea Woman MP Ms Anita Annet Among who has in the previous weeks deployed enormous efforts to retain the Speakership seat she ascended to after she was elected to replace the late Jacob Oulanyah who died on March 20, 2022.
The MPs who have expressed interest in dislodging Ms Among include; Mr Norbert Mao (MP elect Laroo-Pece) Ms Lydia Wanyoto (Woman MP elect Mbale City) and Persis Namuganza (Bukono County).
On Tuesday, President Museveni’s son and chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba who serves as the Chief of Defence (CDF), retracted the quasi-political movement’s endorsement for incumbents Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa, for their candidature of the said positions in the 12th Parliament.
