NAKASONGOLA/LUWERO – The Representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Uganda, Ezana Kassa, together with a delegation from the European Union Delegation to Uganda, conducted a field visit to Nakasongola and Luwero districts to assess progress in Uganda’s sustainable forestry landscape and expanding wood processing industry.
The appreciation tour aimed at showcasing the achievements and opportunities emerging from investments in sustainable forestry and wood-based value chains, which are contributing to economic growth, environmental conservation, and job creation across the country.
According to FAO Uganda, the visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to engage with stakeholders and beneficiaries involved in sustainable forestry initiatives and wood processing enterprises. The team observed ongoing efforts to promote responsible forest management while supporting the development of competitive wood-based industries.
FAO is playing a key role in the implementation of the European Union’s Forest Partnership with the Government of Uganda. Through the Sustainable Wood-based Value Chains in Uganda project, FAO is supporting inclusive investments aimed at strengthening Uganda’s wood industry and its associated value chains.
The initiative seeks to enhance the productivity and sustainability of Uganda’s forestry sector by promoting improved forest management practices, increasing private sector participation, and creating economic opportunities for communities involved in forestry-related activities.
Officials noted that sustainable forestry development is critical for addressing challenges such as deforestation, climate change, and unemployment while ensuring that forest resources continue to contribute to national development.
The project is also expected to improve market access for wood products, encourage value addition, and support Uganda’s broader efforts toward green economic growth and environmental sustainability.
The visit underscored the continued commitment of FAO, the European Union, and the Government of Uganda to fostering a resilient and sustainable forestry sector capable of supporting livelihoods and driving industrial development in the country.
