Kampala, Uganda – After 14 years as a staple of Kampala’s social and sporting life, Legends Sports Bar has officially shut its doors. Located in Lugogo next to the Legends Rugby Grounds, the bar confirmed its closure in a public notice issued on Friday, May 30, following the expiry of its lease.
“Following the expiry of our lease at Plot 1 & 3 Sports Lane, Lugogo, Legends is now closed at these premises. We are deeply grateful for 14 unforgettable years of sports, hospitality, and entertainment,” read a statement shared on the bar’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Founded in 2012, Legends became a popular gathering point for sports fans, music lovers, and nightlife enthusiasts. Its location near the rugby grounds made it a hub for local and international rugby events, as well as themed parties, live performances, and viewing experiences that drew a loyal following.
According to sources close to the establishment, attempts to renew the lease agreement were unsuccessful, despite the owners’ desire to continue operations. Talks reportedly stalled, and the final decision to vacate was made earlier this month, sparking a wave of nostalgia and disappointment among longtime patrons.
Legends’ closure is the latest in a series of shutdowns affecting Kampala’s entertainment venues, with places like Gabz Bar, Levels Lounge, and Mevek Lounge also having recently ceased operations. Stakeholders in the nightlife and hospitality sector point to rising rent, increased operating costs, taxation challenges, and evolving consumer habits as key reasons behind the trend.
The closure is seen as a significant loss for the local sports and entertainment scene, especially given Legends’ long-standing ties to Uganda’s rugby community and its support for youth sports programs.
Despite the setback, management has hinted that the Legends brand may return in some form, encouraging fans to stay tuned for future announcements.
