Sigh of relief for court litigants as lawyers in Masaka call off strike

Lawyers in the Masaka Sub-region have called of the strike which began on June 17 after receiving assurance from Judiciary that their grievances will soon be addressed .
The lawyers, under the Uganda Law Society (ULS) Masaka Chapter, had laid down their tools , demanding the urgent deployment of more five judges and five registrars to address delays affecting the Masaka High Court Circuit, which serves nine districts and Masaka City.


Mr Alexander Lule, the ULS Masaka Chapter President on Monday confirmed the suspension of the sit-down strike after receiving official communication from the Judiciary.
“In response to the Judiciary’s press release dated June 25, 2025, committing to deploy visiting judges to the Masaka High Court Circuit and increase court sessions, the Greater Masaka Bar is pleased to announce a temporary suspension of its sit-down with immediate effect,” Mr Lule said in an interview on Monday.


He added that a recent meeting between the Judiciary, including Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo and acting Principal Judge Jane Okuo Kayuga, and the Radical New Bar Governing Council of the ULS, offered a much-needed platform to resolve concerns.


“The meeting addressed some of the critical issues affecting the Masaka Bar and the legal profession at large. We appreciate the Judiciary’s willingness to listen and act. It’s a step in the right direction to ensure access to justice for the people of Masaka and surrounding areas,” he said.


Currently, a total of 27 law firms and 50 lawyers operate in the Masaka sub-region.
As of April, the Masaka High Court registry had a total of 4,290 pending cases. These include 1,141 civil cases, 1,188 land disputes, and 455 family-related matters, among others.
