KAMPALA. Former Works and Transport Minister Monica Azuba Ntege has died, a source familiar with the matter told this publication late on Tuesday.
This marks the passing of the former politician who oversaw some national infrastructure projects under President Museveni’s government.
She reportedly died at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala City. However, official statements from government and family are pending.
Azuba Ntege 72, served in cabinet for just over three years after her appointment in 2016. She replaced John Byabagambi, who at the time was moved to the Ministry for Karamoja Affairs.
During her tenure, she supervised major road and transport infrastructure programmes before exiting Cabinet in 2019, when she was replaced by current transport minister Gen Edward Katumba Wamala.
During her time in office, Azuba Ntege also made headlines in 2018 when she said senior ministry officials would be investigated for allegedly sharing part of the $2 million (about Shs7 billion) paid by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) Uganda Limited, a company contracted to carry out mandatory motor vehicle inspection, as a performance bond to government.
Her death comes just over a year after the passing of her husband, Mark Kawesa Ntege, who died on January 12, 2025. The couple, who married on February 27, 1998, are survived by eight children.
Azuba Ntege’s time in public service placed her at the centre of Uganda’s transport and infrastructure agenda during a period marked by intent to revive Uganda Airlines, expanded road construction and debates over project delivery and accountability in public contracting.
By press time, neither government nor family representatives had issued formal statements on the cause of death or funeral arrangements
