BULANGE.The Buganda Kingdom has launched the 2026 Airtel Masaza Cup.
This marks the 22nd edition of the prestigious football tournament that continues to play a significant role in youth empowerment, talent development, and community engagement.
The competition, which features all 18 counties of the Buganda Kingdom, has grown into one of Uganda’s most popular grassroots football tournaments, providing a platform for emerging talent while fostering unity among communities.
The 2026 edition will get underway with defending champions Buweekula hosting Kyaddondo at the National Teachers’ College Grounds in Mubende before the action spreads across the kingdom as counties battle for top honours.
Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga welcomed the start of a new season and praised the continued support from Airtel and other partners in advancing sports and social development.
Mayiga emphasized the importance of the Masaza Cup in nurturing talent, noting that several players who have gone on to represent Uganda first made their names in the tournament.
He added that the competition continues to unite people from different backgrounds while strengthening the kingdom’s efforts in promoting key social causes.
He also highlighted the role of football in supporting health campaigns, particularly HIV/AIDS awareness, citing the Kabaka’s long-standing involvement in advocacy efforts.
The Katikkiro further commended partners for the support of various Buganda Kingdom initiatives over the years, including the Kabaka Birthday Run, the Bika Tournament, coronation celebrations, and the Masaza Cup.
Speaking during the launch, Airtel Uganda Managing Director and CEO Soumendra Sahu hailed the Buganda Kingdom for its sustained commitment to promoting football and empowering young people through sport.
He reiterated commitment to continue supporting an initiative that not only develops football talent but also serves as a vehicle for community awareness campaigns and social transformation.
For more than two decades, the Masaza Cup has remained a cornerstone of grassroots football in Uganda, attracting large crowds and offering a pathway for talented players to progress to higher levels of the game.
