Treason Trial of Dr. Besigye and Obeid to Commence

By Nasser Kayanja

The High Court Criminal Division is set to commence the treason trial of opposition politician Rt. Col. (Rtd) Dr. Kizza Besigye and his aide, Hajji Obeid Lutale.

A team of three prosecutors from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has lined up ten witnesses, including serving and retired Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) generals, to testify in the case.

The prosecution alleges that Dr. Besigye and Hajji Lutale participated in a plot to overthrow the Government of Uganda between 2023 and 2024. According to the state, the alleged scheme involved a series of meetings held in various cities, including Kampala, Geneva, Athens, and Nairobi.

However, Dr. Besigye, through his lawyers, maintains that he will not receive a fair trial, arguing that he has not been granted adequate time to prepare his defence.

The two are jointly charged with UPDF Captain Denis Oola.

The case is expected to draw significant public interest as proceedings get underway before the High Court.
