Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga Calls on Members of Parliament to Prioritize National Interest Over Sectarianism

By Joseph Mary Buwule

KAMPALA – 2nd Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Chrispus W.C.B. Kiyonga has challenged Members of Uganda’s 12th Parliament to place the country’s national interest above personal, political and sectarian considerations as they embark on their legislative responsibilities.

Dr. Kiyonga made the remarks while delivering a presentation during the Induction Workshop for Members of the 12th Parliament held at Speke Resort Munyonyo under the theme, “Common Good and the National Interest.”

Addressing the newly elected legislators, Dr. Kiyonga reflected on Uganda’s historical journey from years of political instability and conflict to the relative peace and stability the country enjoys today. He emphasized that the progress achieved over the years was made possible because Ugandans chose to embrace unity and work towards shared national goals rather than allowing divisions to define the country’s future.

He noted that Uganda’s experience provides an important lesson for leaders, stressing that lasting peace, development and prosperity can only be sustained when leaders rise above sectarian interests based on tribe, region, religion or political party affiliation.

According to Dr. Kiyonga, Parliament plays a critical role in safeguarding the country’s unity through legislation, oversight and representation that serves all Ugandans equally.

“The journey from instability to stability reminds us that when we rise above sectarianism—whether based on tribe, region, religion or political party—and focus on national cohesion, we build a stronger future for everyone,” he said.

Dr. Kiyonga urged Members of Parliament to always be guided by the principles of patriotism, integrity and selfless service, reminding them that leadership demands making decisions that benefit the nation as a whole rather than advancing narrow individual or partisan interests.

He said the concept of the common good should remain central to every policy debate and legislative decision, adding that Parliament has the responsibility to promote inclusive development, social justice and national unity.

The induction workshop, organized for members of the newly constituted 12th Parliament, is intended to equip legislators with knowledge on governance, constitutional responsibilities, ethical leadership and effective parliamentary practice before the commencement of their legislative work.

The workshop has attracted presentations from experienced leaders, governance experts and senior public officials who are sharing insights on the responsibilities of Members of Parliament in promoting democratic governance and national development.

Following his presentation, Dr. Kiyonga expressed appreciation for the active participation of the legislators, describing the discussions as rich, engaging and encouraging.

He said the interaction demonstrated the commitment of the new Members of Parliament to understanding the broader national issues that require collective leadership and consensus-building.

As Uganda continues its development journey, Dr. Kiyonga emphasized that the country’s future depends on leaders who are willing to put the interests of the nation first, foster unity among citizens and strengthen institutions that promote peace, stability and inclusive development.

The induction workshop continues with a series of sessions focusing on leadership, governance, public accountability and the role of Parliament in advancing Uganda’s national development agenda.
