KAMPALA. Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has dismissed as baseless reports that she has ambitions to stand for president when she retires as speaker .
Among described the claims as “absolute nonsense” and announced plans to retire from active politics in 2031.
She made the remarks on Monday during a visit to the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Secretariat in Kololo where she had gone to support this weekend’s birthday for first son and chief of defense forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
She was received by David Kabanda, a key official in PLU.
Addressing the growing speculation circulating in political circles and on social media, Among was unequivocal in shutting it down.
“I have heard people making claims that I am interested in the presidency… that is absolute nonsense,” she said.
“People are saying that Anita wants to stand for presidency in 2031. I want to tell Ugandans that even where I am, I have overachieved. I am saying, in 2031, I am retiring from active politics,” she added.
She stressed that her current role at the helm of the Parliament of Uganda remains her top priority, urging the public and political actors to avoid what she termed as unnecessary distractions and instead focus on service delivery and legislative work.
Among also signaled loyalty to the ruling party’s direction, stating she would support any candidate endorsed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
“If my brother is standing or anybody else that the President supports, I will support. This talk that Anita wants to be president is total nonsense,” she said.
Her visit also carried a strong show of support for the upcoming birthday run .
Representing Bukedea Comprehensive School, where she serves as director, Among purchased 5,000 running kits to facilitate participation by students and the wider community.
She said the initiative aligns with the school’s commitment to promoting patriotism, discipline, and youth engagement through sports, and commended the organisers for creating a unifying national platform.
Among further revealed that she will personally take part in the run scheduled for April 26, trading her official attire for a tracksuit to join thousands of participants.
Kabanda welcomed the Speaker’s contribution, noting that her involvement significantly boosts the profile and momentum of the event.
The Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba Birthday Run set for this Sunday is expected to attract large participation from across the country, blending celebration with a broader message of national unity and health awareness
