Pope Leo XIV has arrived in Algeria, kicking off his landmark 11-day apostolic journey to Africa, the first visit of his papacy to the continent where Catholicism is growing fastest.

The first American Pope touched down in Algiers on Monday, April 13, 2026, beginning a whirlwind tour that will take him across four countries: Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. The ambitious trip spans 11 cities and towns, covering nearly 18,000 kilometres with 18 flights.

Vatican officials described the journey as a personal priority for the Pontiff, aimed at turning the world’s attention to Africa, home to more than a fifth of the global Catholic population. The visit combines pastoral encounters with Catholic communities, meetings with political and religious leaders, and strong calls for peace, interfaith dialogue, migration justice, and reconciliation.

In Algeria – the first-ever papal visit to the North African nation – Pope Leo is expected to promote dialogue between Christians and Muslims. The itinerary includes stops in Algiers and Annaba, with possible visits linked to the legacy of St. Augustine.

From April 15–18, he moves to Cameroon, including a key “peace meeting” in the conflict-affected northwest city of Bamenda. Subsequent legs will see him in Angola (April 18–21) and Equatorial Guinea (April 21–23), addressing large Catholic gatherings and youth.

The Holy See Press Office noted that no special security measures have been planned, reflecting the Pope’s emphasis on openness and pilgrimage.

This trip comes amid global attention on Pope Leo’s recent public exchange with US President Donald Trump over issues of peace, nuclear weapons, and foreign policy. Observers say the African journey underscores the Pontiff’s focus on the Gospel message of peacemaking rather than political debate.

African Catholics have expressed excitement, viewing the visit as a sign of the Church’s growing recognition of the continent’s vital role in the future of Catholicism.

The journey continues with intense daily engagements as Pope Leo seeks to strengthen faith and advocate for the continent’s needs.
