Democratic Front Petitions Court Over Alleged Irregularities in 2026 Elections

The Democratic Front has filed a petition before the Constitutional Court of Uganda, challenging the credibility of the 2026 general elections over what it describes as widespread irregularities.

Addressing the media, party president Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba said the petition is based on nine key grounds that, in the party’s view, undermined the integrity of the electoral process.

Among the concerns raised is the alleged involvement of the military in election activities, which the party argues compromised the independence of the process. The Democratic Front also cited the failure of biometric voter verification machines, questioning both their reliability and the legality of their procurement.

The petition further highlights what the party describes as the Electoral Commission’s failure to properly demarcate polling stations and constituencies, as well as the controversial requirement for presidential candidates to collect endorsement signatures from at least 100 registered voters across a significant portion of districts nationwide.

Additional issues raised include alleged irregularities in the updating and compilation of the national voters’ register, and what the party termed as a lack of transparency in the tallying and transmission of results from district tally centers.

Mpuuga stated that, taken together, these concerns rendered the 2026 general elections neither free nor fair. He called on the court to urgently pronounce itself on the matter and provide clarity on the legitimacy of the electoral process.
